Most small businesses use Canva to make the odd social post. Meanwhile it has quietly added a whole set of AI tools (Canva calls the collection Magic Studio) that can design, write, resize and edit for you.
Here are the 12 features that save the most time for a small business, what each one does, whether it's free or Pro, and a workflow that produces a week of branded posts in about 30 minutes.
What Canva AI includes
Canva's AI features fall into four groups:
- Design: generate layouts and whole designs from a description.
- Writing: draft and rewrite text inside your designs.
- Image editing: remove, replace, expand and generate images.
- Productivity: resize, translate and bulk-create designs.
Some features are free with limits; many of the most useful ones need Canva Pro. . Canva also offers a free Pro trial, which is enough to test everything here.
1. Magic Design: a full design from one sentence
Describe what you need ("Instagram post announcing a 20% autumn sale for a coffee shop") or upload a photo, and Canva generates a set of ready-made designs to choose from. It's the fastest way past the blank page.
Use it for: promos, event posts, flyers, presentation first drafts. Free/Pro
2. Magic Write: AI copywriting inside your design
Magic Write drafts headlines, captions, product descriptions and presentation text right inside the editor. Highlight existing text to shorten it, make it more formal or more fun.
Use it for: headlines and short copy. For longer pieces, a dedicated assistant is better (see the best AI writing tools). Free with limits / Pro
3. Background Remover: product photos in one click
Remove the background from any photo in a second. This is the feature small product businesses use most: clean product shots on a white or branded background without a photographer.
Use it for: product photos, headshots, cut-out images for social graphics. Pro
4. Magic Resize (Magic Switch): one design, every platform
Make one design and convert it into an Instagram post, story, Pinterest pin, LinkedIn post, Facebook cover and more, in one go. Canva rearranges the layout for each size.
Use it for: repurposing every design across channels. This alone saves hours a week. Pro
5. Brand Kit: your logo, colours and fonts everywhere
Save your logo, brand colours and fonts once. They appear in every design, and you can apply your brand to a template in one click so everything looks consistent.
Use it for: keeping every post on-brand, even when someone else designs. Pro (limited version on Free)
6. Text to Image (Magic Media): create images from a description
Generate illustrations, backgrounds or concept images from a text prompt. Useful when you can't find the right stock photo.
Use it for: blog headers, backgrounds, simple illustrations. Avoid using AI images to show real products or real results. Free with limits / Pro
7. Magic Eraser: remove anything from a photo
Brush over an unwanted object (a cable, a person in the background, a coffee cup) and it disappears.
Use it for: tidying product and location photos. Pro
8. Magic Expand: fix badly cropped photos
Extend a photo beyond its edges, so a tall phone photo can become a wide banner without awkward cropping.
Use it for: website banners and covers from phone photos. Pro
9. Magic Grab and Magic Edit: change parts of an image
Select an object in a photo to move it or edit it, or describe what you'd like to replace ("change the mug to a glass").
Use it for: quick variations of the same photo for testing ads or pins. Pro
10. Translate: reach customers in other languages
Translate all the text in a design into another language while keeping the layout.
Use it for: multilingual menus, flyers and social posts. Pro
11. Bulk Create: 30 designs from one spreadsheet
Connect a design to a spreadsheet of text (quotes, product names, tips) and Canva generates one design per row.
Use it for: a month of quote posts, a set of Pinterest pins, price lists or certificates. Pro
12. Video tools: captions, highlights and beat sync
Canva's video editor can auto-generate captions, find highlights in longer clips and sync cuts to music.
Use it for: short videos for TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts without separate editing software. Free/Pro varies by feature
Free vs Pro: is Canva Pro worth it for small business?
| Canva Free | Canva Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Templates | Large free library | Full library |

| Background Remover | No | Yes |
| Magic Resize | No | Yes |
| Brand Kit | Basic | Full |

| Price | $0 | per month / year |
Our take: if you post on social media more than twice a week or sell physical products, Canva Pro usually pays for itself in time saved from Background Remover, Magic Resize and Brand Kit alone. If you make a design once a month, stay on Free.
