Pinterest is a search engine, not a social network. A good pin can send visitors to your website for months, sometimes years, which makes it one of the best free traffic sources for a small business blog.

This guide shows you how to make Pinterest pins in Canva that people actually click: the correct size, the design rules that matter, a step-by-step walkthrough, and a batch method that turns one hour into 30 pins. Everything works on Canva's free plan; Pro just makes it faster.

Short answer: create a 1000 x 1500 px design in Canva, use a large, readable headline (5-8 words) on the top half, one strong image, your URL at the bottom, and make several versions of each pin with different headlines and images.

Pinterest pin size and specs

SpecRecommendation
Size1000 x 1500 px (2:3 ratio)
FormatPNG or JPG
Video pins1080 x 1920 px (9:16) or 1000 x 1500 px, 6-60 seconds
TitleUp to 100 characters (first ~40 show in feeds)
DescriptionUp to 500 characters
Text on pin5-8 words of headline, readable on a phone

Very tall pins (longer than 2:3) may be cropped in the feed, so stick to 2:3.

What makes a pin get clicks

Look at the top-ranking pins in the small business niche and the same patterns keep appearing:

  1. A clear benefit headline. "How to Get Your First 100 Email Subscribers" beats "Email Marketing Tips".
  2. Big, high-contrast text. Most people scroll Pinterest on a phone. If you can't read it at thumbnail size, nobody will.
  3. One focal image. A clean photo, mock-up or illustration, not a collage of ten things.
  4. A promise of more. Words like "free template", "checklist", "step by step" or a number ("12 tools") give people a reason to click through.
  5. Consistent branding. Same 2-3 fonts and colours so people start to recognise your pins.
  6. Your URL at the bottom. Small, but it builds recognition and discourages pin theft.

What to avoid: tiny text, too many words, dark low-contrast images, and pins that look like adverts.

How to make a Pinterest pin in Canva, step by step

Step 1: Create the design (1 minute)

In Canva, click Create a design and search "Pinterest Pin". It opens a 1000 x 1500 px canvas. Alternatively, start from one of Canva's thousands of free Pinterest templates.

Step 2: Set your brand (one-time, 10 minutes)

Pick 2 fonts (one bold for headlines, one simple for subheads) and 3-4 colours. On Canva Pro, save them in the Brand Kit so every new pin uses them automatically (we cover this in Canva AI features for small business).

Step 3: Add your headline

Write the headline in large, bold text in the top half of the pin. Aim for 5-8 words. Add a smaller subheading underneath if needed ("free checklist inside", "step by step for beginners").

Prompt for headline ideas:

> Write 10 Pinterest pin headlines for a blog post titled "post title". Each under 8 words, benefit-led, aimed at audience. Mix formats: how-to, numbers, questions and "free template" offers.

Step 4: Add one strong image

Use a stock photo from Canva's library, a screenshot or mock-up of your product, or generate one with Canva's text-to-image tool. Place it in the lower half or behind a semi-transparent colour block so the text stays readable.

Step 5: Add your URL and a visual cue

Put your domain (for example, solostacktools.com) at the bottom in small text. Optional: a small "Free checklist" badge or arrow.

Step 6: Make 3-5 versions

Duplicate the page and change the headline, image or colours. Pinterest favours fresh pins (new images), and different versions reach different people. One blog post should have at least 3-5 different pins.

Step 7: Download and upload

Download as PNG. Upload to Pinterest with a keyword-rich title, a description of 2-3 sentences that includes your main keyword naturally, the link to your post and the most relevant board.

Batch 30 pins in 1 hour

Making pins one by one is slow. The batch method:

  1. Write 30 headlines in a spreadsheet (15 minutes). 10 posts x 3 headlines each. Add a column for the post URL. AI can draft these with the prompt above.
  2. Design 3 master templates (20 minutes). One text-heavy, one image-heavy, one list style. Use the same brand fonts and colours.
  3. Use Bulk Create (10 minutes). On Canva Pro, Bulk Create lets you upload your spreadsheet and fills each template's text fields automatically, generating dozens of pins at once.
  4. Swap images (10 minutes). Quickly change the photo on each pin so they're not identical.
  5. Download all as PNG (5 minutes).

No Canva Pro? Duplicate your template page 30 times and paste headlines in manually. It takes closer to 90 minutes, but it works.

Scheduling your pins

Pinterest rewards consistency over volume. A simple schedule:

  • Pin 3-5 fresh pins per day rather than 30 in one go
  • Spread pins across the week and across your relevant boards
  • Keep pinning older posts with new designs; Pinterest traffic compounds

You can schedule directly in Pinterest for free (up to a limit), or use Tailwind to queue pins in bulk, pick optimal times and see which designs perform.

FAQ

What size is a Pinterest pin?

The recommended size is 1000 x 1500 pixels, a 2:3 aspect ratio. Video pins can be 9:16 (1080 x 1920). Very tall pins may be cropped in the feed.

How many pins should I post per day?

Around 3-5 fresh pins per day is a sustainable target for small businesses. Consistency over weeks matters more than posting a large number at once.

Can I make Pinterest pins in Canva for free?

Yes. Canva's free plan includes Pinterest templates, fonts, images and downloads. Canva Pro adds Brand Kit, Bulk Create, background remover and more premium images.

How long does it take for Pinterest to drive traffic?

Pins often take weeks to a few months to gain momentum, because Pinterest needs time to understand and distribute them. Pins can keep sending traffic for many months afterwards.

Do I need a business account on Pinterest?

A free Pinterest business account is recommended. It gives you analytics, rich pins and access to ads if you ever want them.
